South Africa scrum-half Ricky Januarie's debut try was one of eight in the Ospreys' clinical bonus point win at Viadana in Heineken Cup Pool 3.

The bonus point try came en route to a 34-0 half-time lead in the Ospreys' record away win in Europe.

First half tries came from Alun-Wyn Jones, Nikki Walker, Januarie and Jerry Collins with Richard Hibbard (2), Tommy Bowe and Gareth Owen following on.

Dan Biggar kicked 22 points and Gavin Quinnell scored Viadana's try.

The 55-point margin of victory outstripped the 27-point difference at Harlequins in the 2004-05 tournament, where they won 46-19.

The Ospreys played with a cohesion they have rarely shown in recent seasons, but which has been an increasing aspect of their displays in recent times.

But they will be particularly pleased at Januarie's display. His signing has been controversial despite the Ospreys' well-documented injury problems in that department.

Summer signing Liam Davies produced a man-of-the-match display in their 19-14 win over Munster in the Magners League last weekend, but has not been included in their European Cup roster.

That spot went to Januarie, who arrived from South Africa last week with his Stormers bosses hoping he can rediscover his form ahead of the 2010 Super 14 during a three-month stint in Wales.

On this evidence, the player omitted from the Springboks' recent tour to Europe has already gone some way to achieving that aim, albeit against an Italian side that struggled to cope.

The Ospreys were simply had too much skill and power for the hosts, but also produced the sort of purposeful performance that will begin to make the tournament's serious contenders wonder if the star-studded Welsh team are about to join them.

Januarie's half-back partner Biggar began the rout with a sixth-minute penalty and 10 minutes later lock Jones went over as Viadana suffered immediately for the sin-binning of second-row skipper Quintin Geldenhuys.

Walker was next to cross, taking Januarie's popped pass and the Springbok scrum-half was next to score, darting in from close range.

Skipper Jerry Collins then finished off a long-range effort to claim the bonus point, Biggar adding the conversions to all four opening period tries plus two penalties, the last with the final kick of the half.

Three minutes after the break number eight Filo Tiatia's deft pass sent hooker Richard Hibbard at the end of a long-range attack started by full-back Gareth Owen.

Ex-Scarlet Gavin Quinnell claimed a consolation try for Viadana with a short-range burst from a tapped penalty at a scrum after 54 minutes.

But the flow of the game continued against the hosts as lock Jones sent Hibbard in for his second try.

That was rapidly followed by wing Tommy Bowe going over after he picked up a loose ball near half-way.

But Bowe followed that 63rd minute score with a spear tackle on Viadana wing Kaine Robertson that earned a yellow card.

However, not even being down to 14 men could halt the Ospreys' attacking excellence as full-back Owen finished off a fine's day's work with the visitors' eighth and final try after 69 minutes.

But they spent the last few minutes with 14 men as Bowe's return was rapidly followed by replacement prop Ryan Bevington being sin-binned.

Ospreys forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys:
"It was a job well done. Coming out here is a potential banana skin. They performed very well against Clermont Auvergne and against Leicester here and made things difficult.

"So we're particularly happy to come in half time four tries to the good, but also we questioned that first 20 minutes in that game.

"We felt we were a little bit sloppy, but it was difficult for the boys in the second half to maintain that momentum, but for large part of that we did.

"We've been working on trying to get our style of play to be right, to get the balance right and those sort of snapshots will tell us we are getting people in the right position, doing the right things.

"These boys like to run with the ball, they like to offload and it's great when they do it with accuracy."
