Anglo-Welsh Cup set to carry on

Roger Lewis and Terry Burwell
Terry Burwell announced the Anglo-Welsh Cup is to continue next season

There will be an Anglo-Welsh competition to replace the EDF Energy Cup next season.

The EDF sponsorship deal has ended but the competition will continue says Terry Burwell, the operations director of the Rugby Football Union.

"We have now reached an agreement with premiership clubs that there will be an Anglo-Welsh Cup," said Burwell.

"We are currently looking at the structure. There will be 12 Guinness [clubs] and four Welsh Regions."

The competition is likely to take place on international weekends during the autumn and the Six Nations Championship.

"We will have an Anglo-Welsh Cup competition. It will be different from the one we have had," added Burwell.

"It will have a different emphasis but it will have the same heart and soul."

The last two EDF competitions have been won by Welsh regions. Last season the Ospreys overcame Leicester in the final and last month Cardiff Blues hammered Gloucester 50-12.

Roger Lewis, the Welsh Rugby Union's group chief executive, said: "The RFU are very very bullish and very confident they can deliver an Anglo-Welsh Cup next season."
