Beziers have moved to recruit promising Wales A and Newport No 8 Andrew Powell.
Powell impressed the French in the Heineken Cup
The French club, recently saved from relegation to the second division, were impressed by the 22-year-old in last season's Heineken Cup.
The news will come as a blow to the Gwent Dragons regional side, who also look likely to lose former All Black scrum-half Ofisa Tonu'u.
He has failed to report for pre-season training and is thought to be seeking a contract in New Zealand.
"As Ofisa Tonu'u has not reported for training, at this point he is no longer part of the Gwent squad," team manager Jim McCreedy told the Argus.
"But Ofisa still has a year left on his Newport contract, and I believe there is still on-going dialogue between Newport and his agent."
In other transfer news, Cardiff Blues have named Wales Under-21 player Thomas Rhys Thomas as the third hooker in their squad.
Llanelli Scarlets are still seeking a third scrum-half as cover for Dwayne Peel and Mike Phillips, after Gwent beat them to the signature of Rhodri Jones.
Newport's Dale Burn has been linked with a move to Stradey Park.
Neath and Fiji back-row man Alfie Mocelutu has been snapped up by French second division side Tarbes.
English National League Two team Doncaster have recruited Pontypridd prop Neil Hennessey.
The Yorkshire side have also signed a former Pontypridd prop, Tongan international Ngalu Tau.
