Romania upbeat in defeat
Romania flanker Ovidiu Tonita takes on the Ireland defence

Romania coach Bernard Charreyre took solace in his side's spirited display despite an opening 45-17 defeat to Ireland.

The Oaks caused Ireland problems in the first half and scored two second-half tries courtesy of a penalty try and a late effort from centre Valentin Maftei.

"We are disappointed about the score but it gives us lots of hope for the future of Romanian rugby," said Charreyre.

"We put a very good side under a lot of pressure at times. We blew two tries of our own and missed tackles gave them three.

"If those scores had been reversed the outcome would have been very different.

"I would certainly like to think Ireland feel they have had a difficult evening."
