Pumas props banned

Two Argentine props have been suspended after being found guilty of illegal use of the hand to an opponent's face.

Roberto Grau was suspended for nine weeks and fellow prop Mauricio Reggiardo for six weeks.

Both were cited for incidents during Ireland's 16-15 over Argentina in Adelaide on Sunday, a result which eliminated the Pumas from the tournament.

Grau, 33, was suspended until 31 December after he was found guilty of deliberately raking his hand over the face of Ireland captain Keith Wood.

Reggiardo, 33, was suspended until 20 December after officials concluded the use of his hand to the face of Ireland prop Reggie Corrigan was reckless rather than deliberate, but that it carried a "significant and unacceptable risk of injury."

Reggiardo's suspension means he will miss the first month of the French domestic competition while Grau is not expected to miss any rugby with his Argentine club as their competition does not start until 2004.

Neither the players nor the Argentine management would comment on the decision after the hearings, which lasted almost seven hours.
