Ulster (13) 16
Andrew Maxwell scored Ulster's try in the first half
Pens: Wallace 3
Edinburgh (3) 10
Ulster finished a disappointing season on a winning note with a scrappy success over Edinburgh at Ravenhill.
Winger Andrew Maxwell scored a fine first-half try for the Irish province in the 16th minute after build-up work by Paddy Wallace and Tommy Bowe.
Penalties by Wallace (2) and Duncan Hodge left it 13-3 at the break.
Hodge converted a Scott Murray try in the second half but Wallace added another penalty for Ulster who finish the league campaign in fifth place.
Wallace knocked over a fifth minute penalty and then electrified the surprisingly big crowd when he jinked his way from his own line before feeding full-back Tommy Bowe, who in turn put speedster Andy Maxwell away on a 40-metre sprint to the line.
Hodge banged over a penalty from the halfway line on the half hour which was quickly matched by Wallace to leave Ulster 13-3 to the good at the break.
A Wallace penalty rebounded off the crossbar at the start of a dull second period while Paul McKenzie was surprisingly pulled back for a forward pass when he was clear to the line.
Edinburgh fought back with a series of drives deep into Ulster territory before Murray crashed over with Hodge converting on the hour.
The match remained closely fought until the end, but Wallace had the final say with a wide-angled penalty to kill off Edinburgh.
