Andy Farrell made a try-scoring rugby union debut on Monday in Saracens' A team's 30-12 defeat by Harlequins, 18 months after he changed codes.

The 31-year-old former Wigan rugby league star was playing his first game of either code since November 2004, after suffering a string of injuries.

Farrell scored his side's first try and adapted well at set pieces.

He was replaced after 65 minutes and is now in contention for a place on the first-team bench against Newcastle.

I was watching him rather than the match, and I'm very happy with what he did

Afterwards, Farrell said that once he had got over the culture shock, he had enjoyed his union bow.

"It felt a bit strange and took me five or 10 minutes to get into the game, but after that I really enjoyed it," he said.

"I think on Tuesday I'll feel like I've been in another car crash!" he added, referring to one of the injuries that had blighted his time at Saracens.

"It's nice to get my first game under my belt and to be able to concentrate on rugby, not worrying about my body all the time."

Saracens director of rugby Alan Gaffney was on hand to watch his debut, and went home satisfied.

"I'm delighted how he played, I was watching him rather than the match, and I'm very happy with what he did," he said.
