Pat Lam hopes to return to Northampton as a coach

Pat Lam, who captained Northampton to Heineken Cup glory in 2000, says he hopes to return to Franklin's Gardens one day as a coach.

Lam, who currently works as head coach of New Zealand Super 15 side Blues, led Saints when they claimed a gripping 9-8 victory over Munster at Twickenham.

"I would love to coach in the Premiership and love to coach at the Saints," he told BBC Radio Northampton.

"It's all about timing but I will be heading back to the UK at some stage."

The former back-row forward, who won 34 caps for Samoa, was speaking ahead of Saturday's Heineken Cup final on 21 May when Northampton will tackle Irish side Leinster in Cardiff.

And he recalled his decision to allow former England forward and Saints stalwart Tim Rodber to go up with him to accept the trophy 11 years ago.

"It was surreal at the time. We were standing around waiting for the Munster team to go up first for their presentation," he said.

"I just turned to Tim and said 'Look, mate, I want you to go up there and lift it.'

"He was pretty emotional about it. But he was the leader of our group, he'd been there right from the start and it was real privilege to lift the cup with him."

Lam left Northampton in 2001 and was assistant Scotland coach in 2003, head coach of Pacific Islands in 2006 and head coach of Auckland from 2004-8 before taking charge of the Blues franchise three years ago.
