Leinster kept their faint Heineken Cup hopes alive by edging out Toulouse in Saturday's clash at the RDS in Dublin.

Young wing Luke Fitzgerald notched both Leinster tries, including a first-half effort which helped his side lead 10-3 at the interval.

Valentin Courrent's second penalty cut Leinster's lead but Fitzgerald's second try extended the advantage to 17-6.

Yves Donguy's try helped Toulouse claim a crucial bonus point despite Felipe Contepomi's late Leinster drop-goal.

Leinster's early pressure yielded a successful penalty for Contepomi in the fifth minute.

The Argentine star missed a chance to kick Leinster further ahead but the home team got another boost in the 25th minute when Toulouse forward Gregory Lamboley was sin-binned as the visitors defended desperately in their own 22.

As Leinster continued to press, they turned down a couple of penalty chances in the hope of forcing the opening try.

Malcolm O'Kelly was held up after he had charged over the Toulouse line but the try did come in the 32nd minute courtesy of Fitzgerald's superb finish after Contepomi's clever inside pass.

The Argentine added the conversion to extend Leinster's lead to 10-0 but Courrent replied with a penalty to open Toulouse's account in first-half injury-time.

Toulouse came out fired up after the break and Leinster endured a narrow escape after Florian Fritz's superb break.

Cedric Heyman's run seemed certain to produce a try in the 49th minute but Lamboley failed to hold on to the winger's pass inches short of the Leinster line.

Courrent's second penalty cut Leinster's lead to four but Leinster responded in superb fashion on 56 minutes with Fitzgerald producing another great finish after a flowing backs move.

Contepomi added the conversion to extend Leinster's lead to 17-6.

However, Toulouse got right back into the game in the 70th minute with replacement Donguy having a simple finish after Heyman's stunning break into the Leinster 22.

Turnover ball gave Rob Kearney a chance of a late breakaway try for Leinster but he was caught by Heymans.

Contepomi's injury-time drop-goal left Toulouse hanging on for a bonus point but Leinster were unable to score again and left the French club in pole position to win the group with a home game against Edinburgh to finish.
