Bath's Olly Barkley 'must live with' England omission

Bath centre Olly Barkley admitted he was disappointed to be left out of the England team beaten 27-17 by Australia in the first Test on Saturday.

Barkley did not even feature on the bench in Perth but told BBC Sport he would remain positive.

"Make no bones about it, I felt I'd done well enough to get into the side," he said. "But I don't pick the team.

"It's the coach's [Martin Johnson's]prerogative to make that decision. I have to live with it and respect it."

Barkley kicked three penalties and two conversions as England drew 28-28 with the Australian Barbarians in their opening tour match last week and is expected to play against the same opposition on Tuesday.

I'd say this is probably the happiest tour squad I've been involved in since I've been with England, which is saying something

"I'm not the kind of person to go and throw my toys out," he added.

"If you didn't come out here and try to get in the Test side, then you shouldn't be here. I don't think I'm any different than anyone else."

Barkley stressed that every player still has the chance to impress coach Martin Johnson before Saturday's second Test.

"That's the responsibility and a privilege that we have. We can go out there on Tuesday and lay a marker down."

Barkley is convinced that England will eventually rediscover their winning habits.

"I'd say this is probably the happiest tour squad I've been involved in since I've been with England, which is saying something," he said.

"There's a hugely talented bunch of players and we're just searching for that one win that clicks."
