Declan Kidney gave his old side Munster a long overdue lesson as Leinster took vital Celtic League points at Donnybrook.

Kidney, who guided Munster to Heineken Cup finals in 2000 and 2002, watched tries by Gary Brown and James Norton secure a hard-earned victory.

Munster lived off the right boot of fly-half Paul Burke who landed five shots from six penalties.

The only joy for Munster was a bonus point following the narrow defeat.

Munster started well but despite a colourful opening including a searing third-minute break from Christian Cullen, Munster went scoreless for the first 35 minutes.

Despite an early penalty miss from fly-half Dave McAllister, Leinster went ahead after 14 minutes.

A quick show of the ball from Brown to John Kelly saw the 23-year-old left wing drift confidently inside Cullen to score to the left of the posts. Scrum half Brian O'Meara assumed the kicking duties to convert.

By that time Denis Hickie, recovered from an Achilles injury, had had his first taste of rugby since Ireland's 17-16 Rugby World Cup Pool loss to Australia last November, replacing the injured John McWeeney.

Brown's try gave Kidney's charges the impetus and their lead was doubled in the 18th minute as Norton dribbled a clever chip through to dive over.

Protecting a five-game unbeaten home record, Leinster moved to 17-0 as O'Meara pinged over a penalty on the half-hour, but former Harlequins player Burke kept Munster interested with a 35th-minute kick of his own.

The 31-year-old continued his brilliant kicking cameo, drilling over an early one in the second half and adding three more to leave two points between the sides.

Leinster, although on the back foot and minus sin-binned prop Ricky Nebbett for the final six minutes, remained solid and held on for only their second win in 10 derby meetings since August 1998.
