Promotion is in our hands, says Chiefs boss Rob Baxter

A fantastic game of rugby - Baxter

Exeter head coach Rob Baxter has said his side are in a fantastic position for next week's Championship play-off final second leg with Bristol.

The Chiefs will take a narrow three-point lead to the Memorial Stadium, after winning 9-6 in the first leg.

Baxter told BBC Spotlight: "It's pretty much going to come down to the one-off game and for us and that's a fantastic position to be in.

"It's 100% in our hands. What better position could you be in?"

Baxter added: "We started this season 10 or 11 months ago and we said that we were going to be there at the death, and we are."

The Chiefs have already come away from the Memorial Stadium with a victory once this season, winning 35-26 last October.

But Baxter knows repeating that feat will be far harder come next Wednesday.

"It isn't going to be easy," he said. "There's not a tougher place in the league to go and win.

"But we're going to go and give it a real good go and I think we'll enjoy this week and look forward to getting up there."

Wednesday's first leg saw both sides prevented from scoring tries, with defence the overall winner.

Yet the Chiefs boss felt his side showed the ability they will need to penetrate Bristol's defence when the sides go head-to-head again.

Baxter said: "We didn't quite convert some of our pressure chances.

"But if you keep your level of performance up there, you keep your level of endeavour, keep trying to win and keep trying to score, then sooner of later things will happen."
