Dallaglio keen to involve Johnson

Former captain Lawrence Dallaglio believes Martin Johnson should be involved in the England rugby set-up - but not as head coach.

The World Cup-winning skipper is being tipped as a possible replacement for the departed Andy Robinson.

"I'm sure Martin will be the first to say he does not have a huge amount of coaching experience," said Dallaglio.

"But he has an astute rugby brain and it would be nonsensical for him not to be involved."

Dallaglio is convinced the Rugby Football Union should opt for experience and consider the likes of Bristol's Richard Hill or Wasps' Shaun Edwards for England's coaching set-up.

"We have some very good coaches in the English game but it is important to find the next generation of coaches after that - people like Neil Back and Matt Dawson, if they decide to become coaches.

"That's going to be the only way to continue."

Dawson also believes that Johnson is not the man to lead England out of their current slump in form.

England would be unbelievably fortunate to get to the World Cup semi-finals with the state of play at the moment

Matt Dawson

He told Five Live: "I don't think Martin Johnson would take it on now because I don't think there would be a role suitable for him.

"They desperately need to have some kind of figurehead who has a pure understanding of international rugby.

"Look at the coaching staff we have at the moment. Is it eight or seven caps they have between them? That's just not enough.

"They don't understand the game of international rugby, so how can they coach it?"

And Dawson admitted that the Rugby Football Union faces a tough task in making England realistic challengers for next year's World Cup.

"They would be unbelievably fortunate to get to the semi-finals with the state of play at the moment," said Dawson.

"So, do they totally reconstruct everything from now on? It can't get any worse, surely, than it is at the moment.

"Potentially we can start building for 2011 because, let's be realistic, England need to get themselves out of the mire to get anywhere near qualifying for the semi-finals, let alone the final."
