Andy Farrell made his Premiership debut as a replacement as Saracens destroyed Newcastle to earn their first win of the season and a bonus point.

Glen Jackson kicked the hosts into a 9-3 lead before Jamie Noon's try briefly nudged the Falcons ahead.

But tries from Matt Cairns and Kevin Yates took Sarries clear, a James Grindal score keeping Falcons in touch.

Ben Russell and Kevin Sorrell scored further tries before Farrell came on, helping set up Shane Byrne's fifth try.

Farrell came on in the last quarter
The former Great Britain rugby league captain secured line-out possession after coming on for the injured Kris Chesney in the 64th minute, and Ben Johnston's break set up the Irish hooker to score.

Saracens had already taken full control in the second half, Russell and Sorrell both crossing while Newcastle had flanker Mike McCarthy in the sin-bin for tripping David Seymour.

The hosts were also able to bring on Thomas Castaignede for his first run-out after injury, although the Frenchman was yellow-carded late on for a tackling offence.

Tim Visser's late try on his full debut was of little consolation to the Falcons, who rarely rose above the ordinary.

Farrell, meanwhile, will report for England duty at Loughborough University on Tuesday as Andy Robinson oversees a one-day session for his elite player squad.

  • Saracens flanker Andy Farrell:
"It has been a long time coming, so it was nice to get out there and get this game under my belt.

"I was eager to get on, and as the clock wound down, I wasn't sure if it would happen.

"The boys already had the game under control, so that made it a pretty easy debut for me but the most important thing was that we won the game."

  • Saracens director of rugby Alan Gaffney:
"Andy got a fair bit of a legal 'shoeing', which I thought was good for him. He has got a grin on his face.

"His fitness level would be reasonable for most people in the Premiership but not at the level Andy Farrell himself would want to be at."

"The performance was a huge step forward for us. I thought we showed a lot more composure and the forwards can be delighted with what they did."

  • Newcastle director of rugby John Fletcher:
"I thought the key moment was losing Mike McCarthy to the sin-bin right at the start of the second half.

"We had talked about keeping 15 players on the pitch, but we didn't get that and Saracens scored a couple of tries.

"Their pack played well, and we know we have got to improve quickly in some areas. We have to take this on the chin and work hard because we have only five days before our next game against London Irish."
