Bristol captain Jason Spice buoyed by win at Exeter

Spice wants to perform for Bristol fans

Bristol captain Jason Spice says their Championship win at Exeter in December gives them confidence going into the first leg of the play-off final.

Paul Hull's men take on the Chiefs at Sandy Park on Wednesday in a much- anticipated West Country derby.

Spice told BBC Bristol: "We know we can go down there and win, and win well, so hopefully we can replicate that.

"The success we had is going to help us and help the younger guys but it's going to be a little more intense."

Spice continued: "Their pack is pretty strong and gave us a fair hammering the first time [at the Memorial Stadium] but we turned the tide second time round."

And after what has been a long season the 35-year-old says the players are not getting too carried away with the occasion.

"The guys feet are on the ground and there's not too many who think we're in the Premiership already which is important as we've got two tough games ahead of us, " he said.

"The training's been a little bit lighter than we'd expected at this stage but we're pretty well versed on how we want to play the game.

"It's just a question of fine-tuning things as there's no real need to start banging heads against the wall."

After a slow start to their season Bristol hit a rich vein of form winning 13 successive Championship games coming into the play-offs.

They then managed to finish top of their pool and with the highest overall points total which allows them to have the second-leg of the final back at the Memorial Stadium.

The aggregate score of the two legs will determine whether it is Bristol or Exeter who are promoted on May 26, subject to RFU approval.

Both matches are expected to be played in front of record crowds.
