Jonny Wilkinson extends contract with Toulon

England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson will stay with French side Toulon until at least the the end of next season after agreeing a year's contract extension.

The 30-year-old is the leading individual scorer in the Top 14 with 177 points, with his team lying fourth.

The injury problems that had blighted his career after winning the World Cup in 2003 also appear to have eased.

Wilkinson is back in England preparing for the start of the Six Nations against Wales on 6 February.

The 2003 World Cup winner played only four games in his final season with former club Newcastle after dislocating his knee.

But since signing for Toulon in May 2009, he has started 13 out of his side's 19 league matches.

His absences have largely been because of his international duty as he started each of England's three autumn internationals.

With seven matches remaining, Toulon are well placed to secure the top-six finish required for a place in the end-of-season play-offs.

The French side are well stocked with foreign stars with Argentina's Felipe Contepomi adding depth at fly-half.

South African back-row Joe van Niekerk and New Zealand rugby league convert Sonny Bill Williams have also been imported.
