Carter praises All Blacks 'slam'

All Blacks fly-half Dan Carter paid tribute to his team-mates' self-belief after they beat England 32-6 to seal a 'grand slam' over the home nations.

Carter landed five penalties as New Zealand pulled away from England in a dominant second-half performance.

He said: "We've got great character and we've shown that all tour with the way we've played in the second half.

"The grand slam hasn't happened very often, and to be part of two is something that means a lot to me."

Carter, who was a key member of the All Blacks team that did a similar clean sweep in 2005, said that this season's performances went some way to making up for last autumn's quarter-final defeat in the World Cup.

New Zealand lost several key names after the loss to France but recovered to win the Tri-Nations before going through the autumn both unbeaten and without conceding a single try.

Carter said: "We lost a lot of experienced players this year, and we've had a lot of new faces coming into the team who've really stepped up - that's been huge. We really pride ourselves on our defence.

"To bounce back and have a year like we've had, winning a few trophies and introduce some new guys to Test match footy has been great.

"It's been a great season, and what a way to finish it off."

Carter was not at his best at Twickenham, missing five kicks at goal, but he still managed to orchestrate a convincing win for the tourists.

He now embarks on a sabbatical from the national side, and will start a spell with French side Perpignan next week.

He said: "England did give away a few penalties, which helped us play territory, plug the corners and get our game going, although I was letting them off the hook with my missed kicks.

"I'm really looking forward to it (Perpignan). I'm feeling a little bit stale and that I need a change of scene, and I should get it down there."
