Frenchman Philippe Saint-Andre has been named director of rugby at Sale.

He takes up the role with immediate effect, although head coach Jim Mallinder will stay in charge of the side for the rest of the season.

Saint-Andre was recently sacked by French side Bourgoin after applying for the vacant Wales job.

"I have played against Sale and have always been impressed with the club and the way they approach the game," said the former Gloucester coach.

He added: "Under Jim they have always played the brand of running rugby that I like to see - they play the game the beautiful way and long may it continue.

Sale chairman Brian Kennedy was delighted with Saint-Andre's appointment.

"Phillipe Saint-Andre is a winner and this club wants to win things," said Kennedy.

"He is widely acknowledged as one of the best recruiters and talent spotters in the world, and will bring a new dimension to our ability to build a side capable of winning trophies at the highest level."

Saint-Andre added: "When Brian Kennedy approached me to discuss the role, I had little hesitation in agreeing.
