McCarthy-Scarsbrook nears return

Harlequins prop Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook is closing in on a return for the first team after three months out with a wrist injury.

The 22-year-old, who suffered what he referred to as a "freak" injury against Leeds, made his comeback in a recent reserve game against Warrington.

He told BBC London 94.9: "I try not to think of the games I've missed, just think of when I'm going to get back.

"Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll get a first-team stint."

McCarthy-Scarsbrook's absence has been a heavy blow for Quins, who sit ninth in the Super League table.

Coach Brian McDermott admitted: "To lose him was massive and I'm dead excited to have him back again.

"He's back in contention and he could well play next week.

"Last year when he went on the field I was scared defensively because he didn't handle fatigue. Being able to operate fatigued is a massive part of rugby league. Louis would struggle with that.

"This year, there has been a massive turnaround. And just before he got injured he was one of my go-to props.

"He'd be first name on the team sheet and any type of adversity we have in games he'd invariably be the bloke who smashes the opposition and forces an error or carries the ball and scores a try when we didn't expect it."
