Giants swoop for De Vere
Australia Test centre Michael de Vere
De Vere is Brisbane's all-time leading scorer
Huddersfield have secured the signature of exciting Australia Test centre Michael de Vere on a two-year deal.

The 27-year-old Brisbane and New South Wales goalkicker will join up with the club for the 2005 season.

He is currently injured after tearing an knee ligament and faces six months on the sidelines but coach Jon Sharp believes he will be fit in time.

"This is a massive coup for the Giants and Michael will add further quality to an exciting squad," he said.

De Vere, who played in the opening Origin match this year, appeared in two of the three Tests in the Kangaroos' 3-0 whitewash of Great Britain in last November's Ashes Series.

He is the Broncos' all-time leading scorer after piling up 1,062 points in 162 first-grade games since 1997 and is currently second in the NRL points scoring charts with 65 goals and eight tries.

He admits he is excited at the challenge of playing in the Super League.

I want to play for a professional club that is determined to achieve success and I believe that club to be the Huddersfield Giants
Michael De Vere

"I have always had an ambition to play rugby league in England. I want to come while I am still young, in the peak of my career and enjoying my football.

"I am seeking a new challenge in my career now after achieving my ambitions in Australia.

"I want to play for a professional club that is determined to achieve success and I believe that club to be the Huddersfield Giants.

"They are moving in the right direction both on and off the field and I am very enthusiastic about the challenge and keen to achieve success."
