Jones appointed Catalans skipper
New Zealand scrum-half Stacey Jones
Super League's newest club Catalans Dragons have appointed New Zealand Test scrum-half Stacey Jones as captain for their debut season.

The 29-year-old, who has signed a two-year deal, will lead the club in their historic opening game against Wigan on 11 February.

Jones has skippered former club New Zealand Warriors as well as the Kiwi national team.

"It was an easy decision," said Catalans chief executive Grant Mayor.

"It has been received very well, when the players were told pre-training they all applauded.

"Stacey is one of the world's best players and has captained his country. He has had so much success in the game and commands so much respect.

"When you look at the big challenge which faces us we need the right leader and Stacey will be an excellent mentor for the kids."

Jones was named as captain ahead of a host of French internationals and was presented to the fans at a club open day.

He joined up with his new team-mates last week after resting following his memorable return in the Tri-Nations last year.

Jones was the tournament's leading scorer and played in all five matches as New Zealand lifted the trophy.
