Brett Hodgson's late try gave Warrington a dramatic win over Hull KR.

Tries from Joel Monaghan and Richie Myler put the home side ahead, only for Rovers to hit back through Clint Newton (2) and Blake Green.

Ryan Atkins and Shaun Briscoe traded scores either side of the break, before winger Chris Riley went over to cut the visitors' lead to two points.

Rovers looked set to hang on, but Hodgson converted his own score to have the final word.

Warrington were without Matt King, Chris Bridge, Simon Grix and Mike Cooper, who all picked up injuries in the opening day Millennium Magic defeat by Huddersfield Giants in Cardiff.

But they were quickest out of the blocks, Monaghan crashing over on three minutes after a long pass from Lee Briers. And, six minutes later, Myler raced clear to score, Hodgson adding the extras.

But Rovers, who tasted victory over local rivals Hull FC in the Welsh capital, fought back to take a lead that they held until Hodgson's late heroics.

First they repelled a wave of Warrington attacks, then, with their first real foray into Wolves territory, got on the board when Green's grubber kick was pounced on by Newton to touch down, Michael Dobson converting.

Green then wriggled free of Brett Hodgson to crash over and Rovers hit the front when hooker Josh Hodgson fed Newton for his second of the game.

The visitors' lead was cut before the break when Atkins rounded Jake Webster to squeeze over in the corner. But their six-point advantage was restored soon after the break when a fine move involving Green, Newton and Dobson culminated in Briscoe going over.

Dobson's conversion put Warrington further behind, but they gradually took more control of possession and territory and were rewarded when Riley crossed in the corner.

Rovers led a charmed life in an attempt to protect their lead, but their luck run out when Briers, in the Warrington side after recovering from a neck injury, sent Hodgson crashing over the line after a crisp passing move.

With the Wolves level, Hodgson held his nerve to land a tricky conversion from the right of the posts to give his side their first win of the new season.

Warrington coach Tony Smith:
"Win, lose or draw it was a great game and we could have easily lost or drawn it.

"I thought we created plenty of opportunities in both halves and wondered how the scoreline was like it was at half time.

"Our execution wasn't fantastic but I was really pleased the players stuck with the game plan, which is something we haven't done for a little while. I'm really pleased for the players - I thought they deserved it.

"Credit to the opposition who played their part in what was a fantastic game. They made it hard for us to execute at times and scrambled well and are a team who just graft away."

Hull KR boss Justin Morgan:
"I take my hat off to the boys. They had a real good go out there against a very good team who I imagine will be somewhere near the top come the end of the season competing for trophies. So to go toe to toe with them is encouraging.

"It doesn't make the loss any easier to swallow of course and leaves you with an empty feeling when you have your pocket picked in the final minutes.

"But give credit where it's due, Warrington kept turning up and throwing plenty at us and unfortunately we just cracked at the end."
