Banned Jeff Lima to miss Wigan's World Club Challenge

Wigan's new Kiwi signing Jeff Lima will miss the World Club Challenge against St George Illawarra on Sunday week after earning a two-match ban.

Lima was found guilty of two charges of 'making dangerous contact' on his debut in his side's 16-16 draw with St Helens on the opening day of Millennium Magic.

Salford hooker Wayne Godwin received a two-match ban, while Castleford's Steve Snitch was handed a one-game penalty.

But Wakefield youngster Aaron Murphy got off his two-game ban on appeal.

Snitch will miss his side's home game against Huddersfield Giants on Saturday after making a tackle that 'placed undue pressure on the joints of Wakefield's Paul Johnson' in the Tigers' 40-20 victory in Cardiff.

But Murphy's offence was reduced from Grade C to Grade A on appeal after the tribunal viewed a video showing the incident from a different angle to the ones presented at the original hearing on Tuesday.

Lima, who was also playing his first game for Wigan, was given a two-game ban for separate tackles on Saints duo Sia Soliola and Jon Wilkin.

"We are obviously disappointed to lose Jeff for the two games and he is devastated that he will miss the World Club Challenge," said Wigan coach Michael Maguire.

"However, we believe the hearing was fair and the sentence appropriate and understand that all players need to work within the rules and regulations.

"We are content that the new disciplinary process is well constructed and thorough and we are confident these high standards will be maintained throughout the season."

Lima was also warned about his future conduct after being cited by the RFL's match-review panel for two so-called 'chicken-wing' tackles and handed a two-match suspension.

One incident, in which pressure was placed on the arms of the ball-carrier behind his back, was brought to the attention of referee Richard Silverwood by Wilkin, while he was also charged for a similar offence on Soliola earlier.

After also being fined £300 and issued with a formal warning that a repeat of the offence would result in a lengthy ban, he will miss this Sunday's Super League trip to Bradford, as well as the game against the Aussies.

Meanwhile, St George Illawarra have named 14 players from last year's Premiership-winning team in their 20-man squad to face Wigan at the DW Stadium (27 February, 1915 GMT).

The Dragons opened the 2011 season down under with a 32-10 victory over South Sydney Rabbitohs in Sunday's annual Charity Shield.

They will face Sydney Bulldogs at Wollongong on night before heading for England the following day.

They will then spend five days training in London before heading north.
