Wigan moved one step closer to the Super League leader's shield with victory over defending champions Leeds.

Thomas Leuluai took Darrell Goulding's kick to open the scoring, with George Carmont extending Wigan's lead.

Chris Clarkson forced over before half-time and Leeds drew level early in the second half when Kevin Sinfield crossed after Andy Coley was sin-binned.

But two Pat Richards penalties either side of tries from Harrison Hansen and Martin Gleeson put Wigan out of sight.

At a rain-soaked Headingley, Wigan took the lead when Gleeson sent Goulding down the right, with the winger angling a kick inside for Leuluai to touch down.

Leeds could have then been reduced to 12 men when Carl Ablett came up with a nasty head-high shot on Sam Tomkins, while Ryan Bailey was put on report for a lifting his knee on Carmont.

Wigan's lead was extended when Clarkson conceded possession 20 meters out to allow Paul Deacon and Tomkins to combine to send Carmont over, but Clarkson atoned for his error by brushing off three tackle to crash over and get Leeds back into the game.

After the interval, Coley was bemused to be sent to the sin bin for going in late on Rob Burrow.

The resulting Leeds pressure saw Burrow follow his own kick into the corner and force Tomkins into knocking on, with Sinfield eventually receiving the ball and crossing to level.

But Richards' penalty, after Ablett was found guilty of laying on, put Wigan back in front and the lead was extended when Hansen, who earlier needed stitches in a head wound, raced clear of the Leeds defence.

Gleeson caught the Rhinos defence napping to nip in from dummy-half to put Wigan further ahead and there was still time for Ryan Hall to have a try ruled out by the video referee and another Richards penalty.

Wigan now lie six points clear of second-placed Warrington, who have three matches remaining, while fourth-placed Leeds are a point ahead of Hull FC having played a game more.

Leeds coach Brian McLennan:

"I don't think we executed well, they executed a lot better than us. For a period there, even when we were down by eight, our kicking game fell away there.

"All-in-all I just thought we lost the ruck area a little bit, they are very strong in that area.

"They are very strong in the wrestle and we lost quite a bit of possession there, trying to get up and play the ball quicker, through poor technique and poor grip.

Wigan assistant coach Shaun Wane:

"Last week the nil score line was great. I'm into my defence obviously and the disappointing thing today was the 12 points they scored.

"But we'll have a good look at that, it'll be a tough video session on Monday.

"We hound them about performing to their best all the time and they've ground out a good win, but just those 12 points niggle in the back of my mind."
