Nigel Wright appointed as Barrow Raiders coach

Garry Schofield
Schofield took over at Barrow in November but lasted five games

Championship side Barrow Raiders have replaced head coach Garry Schofield with his assistant Nigel Wright.

Wright will also be joined by former Bradford Bulls conditioning coach Martin Clawson, who will operate in a similar role at Craven Park.

"It is disappointing that things have not worked out with Garry," Raiders chairman Des Johnston said.

"For the good of the club, the board felt that things could not continue as they were."

Johnston added: "It was not an easy decision and one not taken lightly but nonetheless one which we had to make.

"Garry is and will remain a true legend of rugby league and we are pleased that we were able to at least give him an opportunity to take on what we regard as a significant role in the game.

BARROW'S REVOLVING DOOR
2007 - Dave Clark replaces Paul Crarey as head coach at Raiders
2009 - Clark begins season in charge; reaches Northern Rail Cup final; Steve Deakin appointed as new coach, with Clark his assistant in July; Deakin leaves in late August, with Clark returning to lead the club to a Grand Final win
2010 - Steve McCormack comes into replace Clark, who then returns to pick up after McCormack also departs in August
2011 - Schofield is appointed in November 2010 but is removed from the post in March, with assistant Nigel Wright taking over

"We are very grateful for his efforts on behalf of Barrow Raiders, not least in raising the profile of the club so significantly, and we wish him well in his future endeavours."

Schofield, 45, became the club's fourth coach in two seasons when he was named as permanent replacement for Steve McCormack in November.

However, the former Huddersfield coach started with two Northern Rail Cup defeats among his five games in charge.

Barrow, under the stewardship of Dave Clark, who had also initially been replaced by Steve Deakin part way through the campaign, won the Championship Grand Final in 2009, and were Northern Rail Cup finalists, but finished fourth behind Featherstone, Halifax and Leigh Centurions.

The 2009 success allowed Barrow to submit a Super League franchise application for 2012.
