Shock Aussie call-up for duo
Brad Fittler
Fittler will again skipper Australia in the World Cup
Canberra's Jason Croker and Canterbury captain Darren Britt are shock inclusions in Australia's squad for the Rugby League World Cup, which starts in October.

They are joined in the 22-man line-up by Parramatta youngster Nathan Hindmarsh, the only non-representative player to make the squad.

Newly-crowned champions Brisbane, along with Newcastle and Melbourne, comprise half of coach Chris Anderson's squad, which will again be led by Sydney Roosters skipper Brad Fittler, with Broncos second-rower Gorden Tallis his new deputy.

Croker joins Hindmarsh, St George Illawarra standoff Trent Barrett and Newcastle's Adam MacDougall and Ben Kennedy as the five Test debutants in the team.

No place

But there is no place for hooker Jason Hetherington, who played in the 52-0 win over New Zealand in the Anzac Test but has since confirmed his move from Canterbury to London Broncos.

Fellow internationals stand-off Matthew Johns and forward David Furner, who have joined Wigan from Newcastle and Canberra respectively, have similarly been ignored.

Fittler and Newcastle star half-back Andrew Johns are the only survivors from the Australian team that beat England 16-8 at Wembley in the 1995 Centenary World Cup final.

The Australian team goes into camp for two days later this week before a two-week camp ahead of their Test against Papua New Guinea in Townsville on 7 October.

The Kangaroos play New Zealand Residents on 14 October and fly to England for the first Test against England on 28 October at Twickenham.

The final of the World Cup will be played on 25 November at Old Trafford, Manchester.
