Welsh hit hard by World Cup exit
Team boss John Devereux says the whole of the Wales squad were left "devastated" by Friday's World Cup qualifying defeat to Lebanon.

The Welsh missed out on a place in next year's finals following 50-26 loss at the Halton Stadium in Widnes.

"We were all looking forward to a summer Down Under - that was their goal - and it's gone now," said Devereux.

"Unfortunately for people like Lee Briers and Iestyn Harris that was probably their last game for Wales."

Wales led 16-6 at one stage but their hopes were shattered when Lebanon scored three tries in 12 second-half minutes.

We weren't too sure if we were going to have a side because a few blokes had to go home for personal reasons, so it's real satisfying

"We were the best side in the first half," said Devereux. "A lot of chances we didn't put away and they came back to haunt us."

Wales, World Cup semi-finalists in 1995 and 2000, lost out to Scotland on points difference in their qualifying group.

They still had high hopes of making it to Australia via the repechage, but were sunk by Lebanon's spirited fightback.

The Cedars will now face Samoa on Wednesday for the right to take the 10th and final World Cup place.

Wales coach Martin Hall was too upset to talk about his side's loss, but scrum-half George Ndaira, Lebanon's only full-time player who is joining Sydney Roosters for 2008, was understandably delighted.

"We were a bit rusty in the first half but our coach told us at half-time to start believing in ourselves and stick to the game plan and we did," he said.

"At the start of the week, we weren't too sure if we were going to have a side because a few blokes had to go home for personal reasons, so it's real satisfying."

Samoa clinched their place in the repechage final with a 42-10 win over the United States.
