Raymond van Barneveld set a record three-dart average at the Lakeside World Darts Championship in a 5-1 win over John Walton in the quarter-finals.

The three-time champion raced to an early three-set lead, averaging 107.6 after the first 14 legs.

Van Barneveld set an overall average of 103.83 - breaking Dennis Priestley's mark of 102.63 set against Scotland's Jocky Wilson in 1993.

He will meet Andy Fordham, who beat fellow Englishman Darryl Fitton 5-4.

The 36-year-old van Barneveld clinched a tight first set and went on to claim the second 3-1 courtesy of a three-dart average of 117.

And he then threw 11 and 12-dart legs to move within two sets of victory.

But Yorkshire's Walton, the 2001 champion, kept himself in the match by winning the last set before the interval 3-2.

After the restart, though, van Barneveld reeled off three straight legs to regain his three-set advantage.

And he eventually wrapped up victory with a double 20.

Meanwhile, Fordham edged a tense battle with Fitton after leading 3-1 at the interval.

Fitton came out fighting and reeled off six straight legs to level the contest.

Fordham went 4-3 up before Fitton held his nerve under pressure to take out double top and level once again.

But in the final set Fordham produced a 121 checkout to move within one leg of victory and wrapped up the match quickly after.

"It was hard to play against Darryl because he's a good friend," said Fordham. "You have to try and switch off but it's difficult.

"I was inconsistent tonight but I got through in the end."

Meanwhile, Trina Gulliver - Grand Slam winner and world number one - clinched her place in the women's final with a 2-0 win over Karin Krappen.
