Kristan Bromley

Britain's Kristan Bromley won his third European bob skeleton championship in five years after coming second at the World Cup race in Cesana, Italy.

Bromley took the title at the event, which also doubles up as the European championship, having finished runner-up to American Zach Lund.

The Sheffield-based Bromley now lies second in the World Cup standings with three races to go.

"I'm delighted to be European Champion again," said Bromley.

Earlier, Great Britain climbed to the top of the men's World Cup skeleton rankings after podium finishes by Ant Sawyer and Adam Pengilly in Italy.

Sawyer earned a silver medal at the Cesana Pariol track with a time of one minute 56.35 seconds just 0.05 seconds behind Canada's Jim Montgomery.

Pengilly finished in third to collect his first World Cup medal but Amy Williams missed out on a medal in the women's event, finishing in fifth.

The 25-year-old remains in third place in the women's overall standings.

Sawyer's medal is his second on the World Cup circuit, having picked up bronze in Salt Lake City in December, and climbs to fifth in the men's rankings.

Skeleton has been the success story for British winter sport over the last five years.

Medals have been won at the last two winter Olympics - Alex Coomber came third at the 2002 Games at Salt Lake City and four years later Shelley Rudman took silver at Turin.

As a result, UK Sport more than doubled its funding for the sport to 2m leading up to the 2010 Games in Vancouver.
