Gibson happy at 'best ever form'

Essex swimmer James Gibson believes he is in the best form of his career after success as the British Championships.

Witham-born Gibson, 29, took gold in the 100m breaststroke last week to book his place at the World Championships in Rome later this summer.

The former World 50m champion told BBC Essex: "My form this year has been just incredible and is better than ever.

"I feel I can challenge the guys who are the best in the world and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't."

He added: "I think it's going to be really tough for me to win the World Championships, but I definitely think I've got a good shout at making the podium and making the finals."

Gibson failed to make the Great Britain team for last year's Beijing Olympics, but is confident that disappointment is now well and truly behind him.

"I've had a good turnaround in form and picked up a bronze in the Europeans last December," said Gibson.

"Then to go the British Championships and do my best time and qualify for Rome was the icing on the cake."

Gibson's victory in Sheffield last week was achieved in a personal-best time, but he remained cautious as to exactly how good he was swimming.

"The suits that I'm wearing nowadays are very different to the ones I wore four or five years ago, so yes it was a good time, but I'm not sure where it would rank in terms of my all-time best swims," he admitted.

"But the most important thing for me was that I got my hands on the wall first, I won by almost a second and proved I'm still good enough to be in the British team."
