Kent squash mourns Ian Wright

Ian Wright
Wright was secretary of the Kent SRA for more than 40 years

The long serving secretary of Kent Squash Ian Wright has died aged 74.

Mr Wright suffered a heart attack while playing in the Bexley Club Racketball Championships.

He had been secretary of the Kent Squash Rackets Association for more than 40 years and was highly respected across the game.

Alan Thatcher, the chairman of the Kent SRA, told BBC Radio Kent: "So many people have said what a way to go, doing something he loved."

He added: "He was playing his second match of the day at the age of 74. Two years ago he was the national over-70s champion. We all thought he was indestructible.

"He was heavily involved in England squash and the European squash federation, and he helped to promote the sport at so many levels."

Nick Rider, the chief executive of English Squash, told the Kent SRA website: "His dedication at so many levels and in so many ways to the sports he loved will always be remembered by all those who knew him, and the impact of his work will be felt by many more who didn't."

Hugo Hannes, the president of the European Squash Federation added: "No-one could fail to be impressed by his dedication to squash and he will be missed by us all."

The Kent SRA plan to name two trophies after Wright at the County Squash Championships, and England Squash have also expressed an interest in naming the national racket ball championship trophy after him.
