Williams downs Hendry
Williams ended Hendry's hopes of a seventh Masters
Wales' Mark Williams beat Stephen Hendry 6-4 to end the Scotsman's hopes of a seventh Masters title at Wembley.
Williams was made to work all the way and fought back from 3-2 down after taking a two-frame lead in the quarter-final. World number one Williams will meet Jimmy White in the semi-final after the Englishman fought back from 5-2 down to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan. Left-hander Williams started briskly but missed a tricky final black in the third frame to let Hendry back in. The former world number one posted breaks of 70 and 85 to go 3-2 ahead but then blew up in the sixth frame.
Williams levelled at 3-3 but went behind again when Hendry's fourth half-century break took him clear. But the Welshman responded with 80 to level and clinched the final two frames. Williams said : "I had a bit of run but nothing I don't deserve because I'm putting in the work on the practice table." "I know Stephen can play better than that but then again so can I." Williams won the world championship and became world number one in 2000 but admitted he slacked off in the aftermath. "I just wasted a year after winning the world title,"he said after reaching the Masters semi-finals for only the second time. "I didn't practise as hard as I should have done but now I'm practising as hard as ever. "I know my form is not going to come back straight away. "I wasted a year so I know it could be a year before I'm back to my best so if I win a tournament I know it will be a bonus." Hendry was philosophical, saying: "I couldn't have done a lot more. "Sometimes it isn't meant to be. You have got to have the breaks even when you are playing well. "But luck evens itself out and I had my fair share when I was winning tournaments regularly." |
