Wales and Northern Ireland qualify for 2011 Worlds

2011 IFNA World Netball Championships

Wales and Northern Ireland have qualified for the 2011 IFNA World Netball Championships in Singapore.

A nail-biting weekend of European qualifiers in Glasgow saw hosts Scotland the unlucky team to miss out.

Wales lost to Northern Ireland 50-40 in the opening match but then beat Scotland, also victims of the Irish, in the decider for second place.

The pair will face Australia, England, New Zealand, Jamaica, hosts Singapore and eight other qualifiers.

Joining the two European qualifiers, the hosts and the top five teams from the 2007 event will be two teams from each of the other four IFNA global regions - Oceania, Asia, the Americas and Africa.

When Wales compete at the World Championships on 3-10 July 2011 it will be their second visit to Singapore in eight months, as Melissa Hyndman's squad are one of six teams scheduled to compete in the prestigious Six Nations Cup in the country in December 2010.

During the course of the weekend Sara Hale became only the seventh Welsh player to reach the landmark of 50 international caps, while Chelsea Lewis, aged just 16, became the 190th Welsh international and also the youngest.

Welsh Netball chief executive Mike Fatkin said: "This will be a real boost to netball in Wales, as it ensures we will have a really high profile event to aim for over the coming year.

"We're all really proud of Melissa and the girls. We knew it would be a really hard-fought weekend.

"Netball Europe in April proved that there is not a lot between the teams but the girls showed real character.

"They can now look forward to a bit of a break from competitive netball in the knowledge that they've secured Wales' place amongst the elite nations for the World Championships next July.

"After good performances [for Celtic Dragons] to finish sixth in Superleague and [Wales] second in Netball Europe it rounds off a solid season on a real high."
