Fleury in final week with Giants
Theo Fleury of Belfast Giants
Theo Fleury celebrates a goal for the Belfast Giants
NHL legend Theo Fleury will leave the Belfast Giants after this weekend's play-off finals in Nottingham.

The Canadian told BBC Sport that he had enjoyed his time in Belfast.

"I'll have some great memories to take back to Canada when I do go home. We are going to head back on 12 April," added Fleury.

The Canadian was delighted to be informed by BBC Sport that he had been chosen as the British Ice Hockey's Writers Player of the Year.

"I didn't actually know that but I think it's a reflection of how well the team has played this year that I was able to get that award."

Fleury will not be returning for another campaign with the Giants but it's clear that he will not be hanging up his blades just yet.

"You'll see me somewhere next season although I don't know where yet.

"I haven't made any concrete plans and it's still a lovely game and I still want to play."

Anything but winning the play-offs will be a disappointment

However before leaving Belfast, Fleury is determined to pick up another piece of silverware.

The Giants face Newcastle Vipers in the opening play-off semi-final on Saturday in Nottingham with the winners going on to face either Cardiff or Sheffield in the decider 24 hours later.

"We're really looking forward to the weekend. Our goals were to win the Elite League and then win the play-offs.

"We accomplished the first goal and we're now very close to achieving the second part. Anything but winning the play-offs will be a disappointment."

Fleury has been unhappy with the officiating in the Elite League and last month after being thrown out of the game, vowed that he wouldn't return "to this league".

However, Fleury was in a more measured mood on Tuesday.

"I have some business stuff that I need to attend to that's been neglected since I've been here and I've got to get back to visit my kids as well."
