Dirar, ridden by Jamie Spencer for Irish trainer Gordon Elliott, won the Ebor Handicap at York.

The 14-1 chance pounced late under the former champion jockey to land another big success for Elliott, who won the 2007 Grand national with Silver Birch.

Dirar was third behind Overturn in the Galway Hurdle, but the latter faded badly on the turn for home this time.

Rosika, under Kieren Fallon, was a length and a quarter back in second ahead of Bridge of Gold and Salute Him.

"The Grand National was brilliant but I probably didn't appreciate it as I was young at the time. We'll make sure we enjoy this one," said Dirar trainer Elliott.

"The plan was to run in the Galway Hurdle, where he ran well behind Overturn, then to come here and then look at going to Dubai before having another go at the Galway Hurdle.

"He was a cheap buy but he has been improving all the way."
