Virtual lands Lockinge thriller

Jimmy Fortune
Fortune was relieved to hold off the challenge of Alexandros

Virtual, trained by John Gosden and ridden by Jimmy Fortune, won by a nose after a photo finish in the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

Gosden's colt (6-1) travelled nicely throughout but as the race approached the final furlong many of the field were still in with a chance of victory.

And as the contest entered the final stages it was Alexandros who emerged as the main contender to Virtual.

But Virtual held on to the lead and edged out Alexandros in a tight finish.

Henry Cecil's Twice Over raced with plenty of credit to finish a close third after making the running.

However, hot favourite Paco Boy had to make do with fourth spot.

"I thought he'd (Alexandros) got me - I felt sick going across the line," said Fortune.

"But this lad stuck his neck out, and must have just got him on the line. He needed the race the last day, and everything was in his favour today."
