Channon all set for Royal Ascot

Mick Channon says it is the two-year-olds which give him the best chance of victory at this year's Royal Ascot.

The West Ilsley-based trainer told BBC Radio Berkshire Lucky Leigh, running in the Queen Mary Stakes, is his best chance of a victory this year.

He added: "I'm pretty sweet on Ajigolo in the Wokingham, and Please Sing in The Albany Stakes is interesting.

"Of the older horses Dream Desert will go well in the mile-and-a-half three-year-old handicap."

Channon has been Berkshire's most successful trainer at Royal Ascot in recent years, although Barry Hills and Paul Cole also have high hopes for their horses this year.

Hills said he is cautiously optimistic about two of his horses in particular.

"Sometimes your highest hopes don't win - you have to weigh up the opposition and see what it all looks like," he said.

"There's a horse on Thursday called Feared in Flight running in the Hampton Court Stakes and the race is tailor-made for him because the conditions suit what he's done in the past. It ought to be very winnable for him.

"And there's a Daraahem in the King George Handicap. He won a race at Chester over a mile and a quarter.

"He's well handicapped and he should have an outstanding chance in the mile and a half three-year old handicap."

Cole, like Channon, has hopes for one of his two-year olds.

"Thunderous Mood will probably run in the Windsor Castle because it's the easier race, but I might declare him for the Coventry as well," said Cole.

"Jazz Jam is a jolly nice filly - she runs in the Sandringham Handicap and will put up a good show.

"Dubai Dynamo let us down last time, but he's working well and may well go in the Britannia. Strategic Mission won well at Newbury the other day - he's going to go for the King George V."
