William Fox-Pitt clinches HSBC FEI Classics title

William Fox-Pitt has regained the HSBC FEI Classics title from fellow Briton Oliver Townend.

A second-place finish on Navigator in Pau, France, was enough to beat Andreas Dibowski of Germany by two points.

The Classics series rewards the most successful rider across eventing's annual four-star events in Kentucky, Badminton, Luhmuhlen, Burghley and Pau.

"I am very relieved and pleased, and pleased with my horse for coping so well," said 41-year-old Fox-Pitt.

"If someone had told me I would be second here at the start of this week, I would have thought it was a dream."

Sunday's finale was played out in torrential rain in south-west France and Dibowski's clear round piled the pressure on Fox-Pitt.

But despite a shaky start, the Briton held on for his second title in three years.

"The rain meant it wasn't much fun, but we were laughing out in the warm-up area because it seemed so unbelievable," he added.

"The ground was difficult to read, and you couldn't really see, but at least we were on an all-weather surface."

New Zealander Caroline Powell, the 2010 Burghley winner, was third in the final Classics table, with Britain's Mary King fourth and 2010 Badminton champion, Swindon-based Australian Paul Tapner, fifth.
