Michael McKillop celebrated his 21st birthday in style after winning T37 800m gold at the Paralympic World Championships in a world record time.

The Glengormley runner clinched victory in Christchurch in 1:58.90, a second faster than the previous best.

"Back in Ireland it's still my birthday so I have a wee bit of celebrating to do," said McKillop.

McKillop set a 1500m world record earlier this week but was not awarded a medal because of the lack of entries.

The local athlete secured his 800m success after kicking for home from 400m out.

"In Beijing I waited to the 250m mark, but today I decided to go early and catch them out. It worked perfectly," he said.

Medals were not handed out in Tuesday's T37 1500 metres event as Algeria's Khaled Hanani was the only other participant.

The Beijing Paralympics champion clocked 4:14.70 which knocked nearly two seconds off the old world record.

McKillop, who has a mild form of cerebral palsy, prepared for the championships by spending six weeks warm-weather training in South Africa.
