Simmonds smashes world record

Eleanor Simmonds set a new world record as Britain enjoyed another productive day at the European Paralympic Swimming Championships in Iceland on Wednesday.

The 14-year-old won one of six golds for Britain in the SM6 200m individual medley in a time of 3:11.82 seconds.

Team-mate Natalie Jones took silver, finishing 0.27secs behind Simmonds.

Heather Frederiksen, Sascha Kindred, Stephanie Millward, Robert Welbourn and Daniel Pepper all enjoyed success at the top of the podium.

Jones had led for the majority of the 200m medley but Simmonds made her move in the final 50m, powering through to touch first in her strongest freestyle leg.

"I have worked hard to improve my breaststroke recently and I knew that I had a chance to close in on her through that so I put my head down through the final 50m and I got it," said a delighted Simmonds.

Frederiksen also set a new world mark in the women's S8 50m freestyle with a time of 31.21secs, almost half a second off the previous record.

"That is one that I have been chasing for almost six months and to finally get it is great," said the 23-year-old.

Britain took a clean sweep of medals in the S9 400m freestyle final as Millward knocked nearly two seconds off the European record with a time of 4:43.08secs.

Louise Watkin took silver while Lauren Steadman finished with bronze.

"I really didn't think I would win the 400m free let alone break the European record," added Millward.

Paralympic relay gold medallist Welbourn dominated the men's S10 400m freestyle final, finishing six seconds ahead of Germany's Lucas Ludwig.

Kindred was also in commanding form, finishing eight seconds ahead of the field in the SM6 200m individual medley final, with team-mate Matthew Whorwood taking bronze.

Pepper edged out compatriot Nicholas Boylan in the SB14 100m breaststroke final, while Matthew Walker added a silver to the gold he won on Monday in the SM7 200m individual medley.
