Derry sprinter Jason Smyth twice broke his own world record on the way to claiming Ireland's second gold medal at the Paralympics in Beijing.

Smyth stormed to a comprehensive victory in 10.62 seconds in the T13 100 metres final on Saturday.

Earlier, Smyth had clocked 10.81 in the heats which cut .04 seconds off his previous world record mark.

The Londonderry athlete will hope to claim a second gold medal in the 200m final on Tuesday.

Smyth was elated after claiming the 100m gold.

"I knew it was there," he said. "It was just a matter of coming out and doing it on the big occasion, and I'm so pleased I did," said the visually-impaired sprinter.

"I'm thrilled. It's awesome. I've put in so much work.

"The race went very well. My start was just average but I got going and once I was close to the end I knew that I had it."

Smyth revealed that he was not aware that he had clocked another world record until completing his lap of honour.

"I only realised when I came back here when I saw the screen," said the sprinter.

"You're in a stadium with 91,000 so you've got to make the most of it and I did.

"The people here come out in force. They get into it and there's a good atmosphere."

The 200m heats are scheduled for Monday morning at 0236 BST with the final taking place on Tuesday at 1240 BST.

Smyth earned a sprint double at the World Paralympic Championships in 2006 and that mantle the burden of favouritism going into Beijing.

"You know you are expected to win but you don't really want to think about it or talk about it.

"I'm glad it's all kind of done now and it paid off."

Belfast runner Michael McKillop claimed the T37 800m gold for Ireland on Wednesday.
