Weir leads strong British display
British wheelchair racer David Weir
Weir also triumphed in this year's London Marathon
David Weir led a series of good performances from Britain's top wheelchair racers at Saturday's Swiss Open event in Ibach.

Weir recorded four victories in the 400, 800, 1500 and 5,000m events, setting a new British record in the 5,000m.

There were also promising displays from Shelly Woods, Anne Wafula Strike and Brian Alldis.

Despite the bad weather, the meeting featured the world's best racers.

Weir clocked an impressive 46.90 seconds for the 400m, beating Kenny van Weeghel into second place, while Alldis finished seventh quickest in the T54 category in 51.25.

Weir, who beat Kurt Fearnley to win the London Marathon earlier this year, got the better of his Australian rival again in impressive style on the track.

He edged out Fearnley by 0.22 seconds in the 800m but was in devastating form in the 1500m, finishing in three minutes 2.88 seconds, over five seconds clear of the Australian.

There was another close finish in the 5,000m with Weir clocking 10:11.39 ahead of Fearnley's 10:11.56.

Woods' best performance came in the 1500m where she finished third in 3:46.46, just behind Paralympic champion Chantal Petitclerc from Canada and Switzerland's Sandra Graf.

She also finished fourth in the 5,000m.

Anne Wafula-Strike finished a superb second to Petitclerc in the T54 category in the 100m in 17.91 seconds and also finished third in the 200m in 32.77 seconds.

The British athletes will remain in Switzerland for a track meeting in Pratteln on Thursday before a wheelchair marathon in Oensingen on Sunday.
