Phil Taylor defeated Simon Whitlock 7-3 to win the PDC world final on Sunday

Phil Taylor, the 15-time world darts champion, has been inducted to the City of Stoke-on-Trent Hall of Fame.

The 49-year-old received the honour at a civic reception on Thursday, with the late Stoke City and England footballer, Sir Stanley Matthews also recognised.

"For my own town to recognise me and do this for me, I'm very honoured," Taylor told BBC Radio Stoke.

"You can't win this sort of thing. I can think of a thousand other people that could have gone miles before me."

Taylor retained his PDC world title on Sunday, beating Australia's Simon Whitlock 7-3 in the final at the Alexandra Palace.

He enjoyed an astonishing year in 2009, winning every ranking event in the PDC calendar.

Taylor and Matthews, who died in February 2000, became the first inductees into the Hall of Fame.
