Former world champion Martin Adams strolled into the quarter-finals of the BDO world championship with a 4-1 win over Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney.

Number three seed Adams will now play fellow Englishman Garry Thompson who beat Martin McCloskey 4-1.

Number two seed Scott Waites was also a comfortable winner as he beat Scotland's John Henderson 4-1.

Waites will be up against Martin Phillips in the last eight after the Welshman defeated Paul Carter 4-2.

In a match lacking in quality, the Republic of Ireland's McCloskey took the first set, but Yorkshire captain Thompson produced the slightly more consistent darts to go through.

He will have to up his game against Adams, who won the title in 2007.

England's captain raced into a 2-0 lead in his last 16 match, but missed doubles in the third set to allow Gurney back into the match.

However, Adams recovered his rhythm as he took the next two sets with ease.

He threw two 121 checkouts and recorded a three-dart average for his first nine darts that hovered around 110 in his dominating performance.

"I've not been too clever on doubles the last couple of days in practice, but I hit them on stage," he told BBC Sport.

"Daryl was a bit unlucky at the start and then he was trying too hard and he was just missing out on hitting the trebles which dented his confidence."

Yorkshireman Waites stormed through the first three sets of his round two encounter with Henderson but the Scot finally began to nail his favourite double 20 to win the fourth set without dropping a leg.

However, Waites reassumed control in the fifth, breaking Henderson's throw before wrapping up victory with a stunning 139 checkout.

Phillips led 2-1, but England's Carter levelled when he took a nervy fifth leg in the fourth set after the Welshman missed a double to open up a two-set advantage.

Phillips, who last reached the quarter-finals in 1992, regained his composure to take the next two sets, although he missed six darts to win the match, before hitting double eight to wrap up victory.
