David Millar
David Millar
DOB: 4/1/1977
Nationality: British
Best Tour: 2000 - Prologue winner; 2004 - 55th place, one stage win
David Millar's preparations for the Tour de France have not been ideal.

The Scottish rider's Cofidis team have been subject to a drugs probe by racing officials this season.

Several team members have been arrested on suspicion of using and distributing banned drugs but Millar says they are "isolated" cases.

And the Scot himself was brought in for 48 hours of questioning by French police as part of an investigation into the case.

His build-up was then further hampered when the team decided to temporarily quit all competition, a decision which has since been reversed.

The Briton, though, is used to bad Tour preparations, having suffered a horrific crash when he was hit by a motorbike during the Criterium International last year.

The 27-year-old has long been billed as a future winner of the race but could only muster a reasonably disappointing 55th last time around.

After some poor performances in the mountains, he at least took something away from the race with an impressive win on stage 19.

He was also exceedingly unlucky not to pick up the leader's yellow jersey on the prologue, only missing out when his chain slipped in the latter stages.

Millar clearly has the class on his day to beat the world's best - he won the world time trial in Hamilton last year - but he has too many off days and makes too many excuses at present to consistently bother the best.

Millar's riding style has been compared to that of three-time winner Greg Lemond.

He was plucked from obscurity at the age of 21 from the amateur ranks by the same man who discovered both Lemond and double Tour winner Laurent Fignon.

Millar was born in Malta and raised in Scotland, England and Hong Kong. He now lives in Biarritz, France.
