Jonny Bellis upbeat despite Tour of Britain exit

Jonny Bellis

Manx cyclist Jonny Bellis struggled to make an impact in his return to racing at the Tour of Britain last weekend.

The 22-year-old had targeted the tour for his comeback after he was critically injured in a scooter accident in Italy in September 2009.

He was forced to withdraw from the first race after less than 50 miles.

The Isle of Man rider said: "I was just happy to be on the start line. The end result was always going to be difficult."

He added: "I don't have the race fitness yet but considering I was nearly dead a year ago to be able to race at all is amazing."

The Tour of Britain is the UK's biggest professional bicycle race and is run over eight stages starting in Rochdale and ending in London.

The former world under-23 bronze medallist will now prepare for another operation in London to treat a hernia problem, which forced him to pull out of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

After that he will begin winter training in Italy with Team Saxo Bank. In the long term, he has set his sights on competing for team GB at the London 2012 Olympics.

Bellis is regarded as one of British cycling's best academy products and had just completed his first full season as a professional with Danish team Saxo Bank when the accident occured.
