Bradley Wiggins will not ride for England at the Commonwealth Games after deciding to end his season early.

The 30-year-old Team Sky cyclist announced his change of plan after finishing a disappointing 24th overall in the Tour de France.

"Half the reason that I wasn't that good here was because I've done too much already," he said on Sunday.

Wiggins, who came fourth in the 2009 Tour, will now end his season with the Tour of Britain in September.

"I've pulled out of the Commonwealth Games... I need a proper break," he said on Sunday, having said in April that he was missing September's World Championships to focus on the Delhi event in October.

Wiggins said his itinerary had been "non-stop" since his fourth-placed finish at the Tour de France last year and his switch to Team Sky in December.

The Londoner had hoped to head a top-three finish for Team Sky in this year's Tour de France, but he was unable to recover from a poor start in the prologue.

He now plans to rest and refocus for next season.

"The Tour of Britain will be my only other race this year, then I'll start building towards next year," he added. "We know what we have to do, and what we're going to do."

Wiggins joins fellow British cyclists Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton in pulling out of the Commonwealth Games.

Hoy and Pendleton have both chosen to focus on the European Championships in November which now carry qualification points for the London 2012 Olympics.

The Tour of Britain starts in Rochdale on 11 September.
