Goss powers away to win the 116-mile ninth stage

Astana's Alexandre Vinokourov maintained his overall lead in the Giro d'Italia after Australian Matthew Goss took stage nine in Cava de' Tirreni.

New Zealander Greg Henderson was eighth for Team Sky, while Bradley Wiggins finished 106th to fall to 24th overall, 10 minutes 54 seconds off Vinokourov.

Fellow Briton David Millar, who was third after the seventh stage, is down to 35th after coming home 61st.

Italy's Filippo Pozzato and USA's Tyler Farrar followed Goss across the line.

Goss, 23, held off Pozzato and Farrar to earn his first victory of the season after the peloton had finally reeled in a breakaway group of four riders, including Team Sky's Michael Barry, with three miles to go.

Vinokourov's overall advantage on Australia's Cadel Evans remains 1:12 with both securely embedded in the leading group.

But 2008 Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre trailed in 1:49 behind Goss to fall almost ten minutes off the overall pace.
