Isle of Man cyclist Mark Cavendish has been nominated in the breakthrough of the year category at the 2010 Laureus World Sport Awards.

In 2009, he won six stages in the Tour de France and became the first British rider to win on the Champs-Elysees.

Cavendish, 24, will face stiff competition for the award from fellow Britons Formula 1 driver Jenson Button and diver Tom Daley.

The awards are to be held in Abu Dhabi on 10 March.

Button won the Formula 1 drivers championship in 2009 while Daley became the World Diving champion at the age of just 15.

Also nominated are tennis player Juan Martin del Potro, South Korean golfer Ji Yai Shin and German Bundesliga winners Wolfsburg.

In 2009 Cavendish confirmed his status as one of the world's leading sprinters with a string of fine results.

As well as his achievements at the Tour de France he won the Milan-San Remo Classic, known as one of the 'five monuments of cycling', and the Sparkassen Giro Bochum.

In September he recorded the 50th win of his road-racing career in a sprint finish in the opening stage of the Tour of Missouri.

The 'Manx Express' has delayed the start of his 2010 season because of an ongoing dental problem.

He will will not begin racing until the Ruta del Sol on 21 February.
