Jan Ullrich competes in the Giro d'Italia
Ullrich is warming up for another shot at the Tour de France
Germany's Jan Ullrich won the 50km individual time trial stage of the Giro d'Italia around Pontedera on Thursday.

The T-Mobile rider set a time of 58 minutes and 48 seconds, 28 seconds faster than Italy's Ivan Basso with his compatriot Marco Pinotti, 1:01 adrift.

Basso's performance was enough to extend his overall race lead to two minutes and 48 seconds over Spain's Jose Enrique Gutierrez.

Ullrich is not in contention overall, trailing Basso by over eight minutes.

The German, warming up for another bid at victory in the Tour de France in July, rode at an average speed of 51.02 kph (31.63 mph) as the 21-stage race resumed after a rest day.

While Basso, second to Lance Armstrong in last year's Tour, increased his overall lead, former Giro winners Damiano Cunego and Gilberto Simoni fell to over seven minutes behind.

Spain's Jose Gutierrez Cataluna is second overall, 2:48 back.

Friday's 171km 12th stage is from Livorno to Sestri Levante.
